Herbs are important for every meal since they add extra flavor to the dishes. Even if you are not the kind of person who enjoys gardening, you can easily plant and maintain herb garden. Great thing about this is that you will have a constant supply of fresh herbs which you can add to your favorite dishes without spending any money.
There are many varieties of herbs. A person can be easily confused by which herb to plant and which to not. The easier way to do that is you can look in your kitchen and see which herbs are mostly used. Once you know which ones you need, you can plant them. Most commonly used herbs are basil, dill, parsley, sage, mint, chives and rosemary.
Before you plant the herbs in the soil make sure that water is able to drain in that area. If the water stays saturated, your herb plants may never be able to grow. One way to get rid of this type of problem is to dig a one foot hole and put crushed rocks below before replacing the soil. This way the water will not be saturated and will be easily drained thus saving your plants.
You can buy seeds for the desired herbs and plant the. Since they grow at a much faster pace, you don’t necessarily have to buy expensive plants. Mint is known to grow at a much faster pace. It’s a good idea to grow aggressive plants in the pots since this way they will not be able to dominate the entire area. Give your plants at least a few months before harvesting any herbs. If you harvest too early, it can be fatal to the plant. Once you have harvested the herbs, you can dry them out by placing them on the cookie sheet and baking at 170 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 to 4 hours.
After that you can use them in your cooking. If you want to store the herbs for later use, you can put them in a container but be sure to check if they have accumulated any moisture. If you find moisture, you’ll have to re-dry them because if you don’t mildew will grow.
