So often do we see in life the people who did not have much self-esteem which could have been caused by so many reasons. They were not able to harness their full potential to be successful in life. Self-esteem plays a very important role in the life of an individual. The successes and accomplishments which he will enjoy in life, owe a lot to the way a person may feel about himself. Parents are a role model for their child or children. Children tend to copy what they observe their parents doing or the ways they behave.
Building self-esteem in a child doesn’t start when he/she grows up but rather very early in their childhood. Parents who work on building their child’s self-esteem at a young age, enjoy the rewards of their child’s accomplishments later. As a parent you should,
* Remind your child of unconditional love for him/her. Say “I love you” to your child each and every day so he knows that when you love someone, it’s alright to express their feelings. If your child behaves badly, remind him that you may not like his behavior but you love him very much.
* Demonstrate positive behavior in front of your child. Your attitude and tone should always be positive. This will teach him that thinking negative will not help, but hurt him.
* Award your child with something he likes when he completes a task, no matter how small it may seem. Praise will give him confidence which will benefit in life. Your child will learn that positive acts lead to positive praise.
* Communication is a must in any relationship .If your child feels lonely, sad, unhappy, angry ,communicate with him openly and patiently with them. Do not be angry with them. They are too young to understand their feelings. Do not judge or criticize them. Ask your child what he may be feeling and if he is going through a difficult situation, present different ideas and solutions that might be of help.
By doing so your child will learn that whatever type of obstacle life may throw at him, he can overcome it by thinking positive and finding solutions to the problems.
* Teach your child the benefits of setting goals to reach their dreams. Along the way praise them whatever successes come their way. It is very important to set goals in life, so a child can learn that there are many small steps which will lead him to his desired goal.
