What is Food Poisoning
Food poisoning is caused by consumption of food or drink which contains a pathogenic micro-organism or it’s toxin. Food poisoning is common in hotels, hostels, place where people in large numbers may eat or drink or any festive place. Since a lot of people are in close proximity so groups of people can be affected by having same symptoms.
Types of bacterial Food Poisonings:
* One of the common food poisoning is caused by salmonella nad there are three different varieties of salmonella bacteria, salmonella typhimurium,salmonella cholera suis and salmonella enteritidis. These bacteria are present in milk, milk products and eggs. Symptoms caused by this type of poisoning includes nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and sometimes is accompanied by fever.
* Botulism is a very dangerous type of food poisoning caused by clostridium botulinum. In this type of food poisoning fever and diarrhoea are rare but the patients nervous system is affected. Symptoms start with double vision and weakness. Later cardiac and respiratory problems arise resulting in death.
* Staphylococcal food poisoning is caused by staphylo coccus aureus. The organisms cause skin problems such as boils and eruptions. It enters in the human body through milk or milk products. Diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and vomiting is common is this type pf food poisoning.
* Closteridium food poisoning is caused when food articles are cooked and kept at room temperatures for a long time and than heated again before eating. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
How to prevent Food Poisoning:
* Maintain hygiene while coming in contact with food.Sick people should avoid coming in contact with food materials.
* Clean water should be used.
* Cooked food should not be kept at room temperature for a long time. Cooked food should be kept in closed containers . Cats, dogs or rats etc. must not come in contact with cooked food or food materials.
* Kitchen should be kept clean and tidy.
* Vegetables and meats should be thoroughly washed before cooking.
