With proper treatment 80% of diagnosed people with depression can make significant improvement in their moods and lives. However it’s unfortunate that many individuals do not seek treatment for this disorder.
What causes Depression?
In U.S, women are twice as likely to have depression than men. About 20- 25% of women and about 12% of men will experience depression at some point in their life. A lot of women go through depression after child birth, changes in hormonal levels etc.More women seek treatment for this disorder than men. It could be because women are more willing to accept emotional symptoms such as depressed mood, not feeling happy about anything , feeling of loneliness etc.
On the other hand few men accept and seek treatment as they are less willing to accept any emotional disturbances and they try to fix it by using alcohol and other substances. That only masks the problem and does not help in identifying and controlling the disorder.
Other factors such as age, marital unhappiness, heredity etc. also play a part in developing chances of having depression. The most important thing is that this disorder should not be taken lightly and immediate treatment must be sought so a person can get his/ her life back.
