Resume Writing Tips
A well written resume could make a difference in getting or losing a job. There are certain techniques , if followed could be very well worth your time and effort.
1. It’s a good idea to print your resume and cover letter since that will be easier for a recruiter to read the resume instead of tossing it away.
2. Times Roman font works best for paper based resumes and Courier, Monaco, Arial or Verdana fonts work well for electronic resumes. Do not use capital letters everywhere. Generally the size of font for the body is between 10 – 12 points and for the header is between 11 – 14 points. Always keep the body and header font size in proportion.
3. Use black and blue ink in your application. By using darker colors , photocopies if made look better.
4. Proofreading is very important in writing a resume. It’s importance cannot be described easily. One small mistake could make you lose the job. Always proofread twice or three times.
5. Keep the paper clean and crisp. No coffee marks or wet stains should be on the resume.
6. Do not attach or send your picture with your resume ( unless if you are applying for acting , modeling positions or if the employer asks for your picture).
7. Do not write lies in your resume. A lot of companies do background checks these days. Even small lies should be avoided.
8. It is always said that the shorter the resume, the better. Keep your resume to a maximum of two pages.
9. Remember your resume creates your image and it should match with the position that you are applying for.
10. You don’t have to list all of the positions that you ever worked for i.e flipping burgers or working in a laundromat when you were 17 will not land you the executive position that you are applying for.
11. Employers don’t have enough time to read the paragraphs in a resume. Instead use bullet points for your education, work history etc.
