There is no doubt about the advantages of breast feeding your child. However, if you are a first time mom, sometimes it can be quite easy to get discouraged and therefore give up breast feeding. There is a certain plan which must be followed to ensure the health and well-being of yourself and your child.

Healthy, nourish able and digestible milk can only be produced by a mother who is healthy since if she impairs her health and digestion because lack of exercise, improper diet, impure air etc. ,she will not be able to provide the quality of milk for the baby.

One of the most common mistake is to assume that if the woman is breat feeding, she is allowed to consume, liquor or any alcohol based drink. The result is that it stops the secretion of milk instead of increasing it. The breast milk is usually established by second or third day subsequent to delivery. If the woman has problems in breast feeding ( which usually happens with first born) than the doctor or nurse should be told about it. They can help guide the mother so both her and the baby can enjoy this precious time.

The infant should be nursed with intervals every three to four hours day and night after child birth. This in between time allows for the milk to be digested and it helps keep the child bowels in order. A young mother may offer her breast to the child every time the child cries but that will cause problems since the earlier milk may not have been digested yet and child’s bowels become out of order which may cause discomfort.

The child should not be allowed to have nipple in the mouth all night long. If nursed as suggested, the child should be awaken as the hour for the meal approaches. It has benefits for the mother and the child.
