Hurricane is a severe tropical cyclone with winds of 73-126 knots. Hurricanes usually last for a week. Heat and warm ocean waters are an ideal components of a storm turning into a hurricane. The calmest part of the hurricane is ” The Eye” which is not intense and has only light winds and fair weather. However, when it touches land it has the capability to cause severe damage to trees, buildings and cost thousands of lives.
Before a hurricane approaches, have an evacuation plan ready for yourself and your family. There are certain steps that you can take to protect your self and your loved ones from the hurricane. If there is a slightest chance that you might be in it’s path, best thing is to consider evacuation. However, if you plan to stay than you should;
- Board up windows and remove outdoor objects that could be blown away.
- Keep enough water and food for at least 3 days or more. Remember to stock up on medications (if you take any).Canned foods or non-perishable items are the best choices since they do not require cooking or preparation. Stock up healthy snacks for kids.
- Get a disaster supplies kit for your car and home.
- One of the most important thing is to make sure that you have enough gasoline in your car or it is full.
- Have plenty of batteries available to listen to radio for storm advisories. Keep a flash light handy in case of power outage.
- Have cash with you because after hurricane hits, banks and ATM’s may be temporarily closed.
- Know how to turn off electricity, gas and water.
- Make arrangements for your pets.
- If one of the family member is elderly or needs special attention, alert local authorities about his/her condition so they may be able to take steps accordingly.
- Check your insurance coverage. Companies stop writing coverage when a storm is approaching. Remember that a standard insurance doesn’t covers flooding and that there is special flood insurance from federal government.
