Breast Cancer- A Bitter Truth

In this world, woman plays a key role in the development and progress of any society or nation. She contributes immensely in producing healthy minds and sound bodies. Her presence can be compared to a key element of the human body, the heart. As without this organ the body would not be able to survive or function.

Society relies on her to produce benevolent and proficient generations. Her role is so influential that it is like the foundation of a building. If the foundation is vulnerable, no matter how magnificent and impregnable the building might appear to be, it will not last for a long time. As a woman,she has a huge responsibility of bearing and raising children. Waking up in the morning to go to work, dropping the kids to school, taking care of her family, household chores are only to name a few. She is so much engrossed with her family and kids that it is not facile to think about any thing else in life however; there are things in life that require pondering. Some diseases exist that are life-threatening and early diagnosis could make a difference between life and death. One such disease is breast cancer.

Gone are those days when a woman could think,

Breast cancer! It can’t happen to me.

We tend to think that a man sitting on the bench, a woman shopping through the mall, a clerk selling merchandise in the store and thousands of other individuals with whom we interact in our every day lives, are more vulnerable to this disease than us. There are some questions that need to be asked in order to realize the viciousness of this disease. How many more women are going to lose their lives before we start accepting the harsh reality of this disease? Is it really worth to think that it won’t happen to us? What good would that do if the disease were found at the last stage?

As human beings, it is quite normal for us to reject the idea of ever dealing with unfavorable things, let alone diseases. But denial in this case would not lead us to a more preferable situation. This type of cancer occurs near the area of breasts so it is especially tough for women to go through this process, as breasts are essential part of her sexuality and they are the ornaments of her self-esteem.

She has to deal with two things, first of all, cancer itself and than because of its location, the emotional part as well. Women, who encounter this terrible disease, need eminent amount of support from family and friends.

There is a saying,

Prevention is better than cure.

We have to take care of our selves today for a better tommorrow. We have to let go of the ignorant behavior and start accepting the truth, which in turn could be our salvation. Awareness about it could help tremendously in saving lives and it’s the only way that we can beat this horrendous disease. We have to be well educated and informed about what causes this disease? Are we at a greater risk of carrying it? Are there certain factors that could increase our chances? What are the symptoms of the early stages? Can family history influence the risk? Etc.

Mammograms should be performed regularly, as they often can assist in finding any abnormality and can detect the early stages of this disease. With the help of modern technology, women have better chances of survival .We have to believe that knowledge and awareness is the power and the way to a better and brighter future.
