Sarah, lay there on one of the beds in maternity ward, thinking of what lay ahead for her.She had been so eager and fervent for this moment, yet now she feels timid and apprehensive. With sweat running down from her forehead, toward one side of her face, kissing the nape of her neck, she stares at the ceiling. She could hear the screams of another woman who was brought into the maternity ward ,a few seconds earlier.Holding the side of the bed with her hands while she was having excruciating amount of pain with each contraction, she keeps her composure.
She is glad that now she is closer to her destination. She did not reach this stage in the nick of time, but after long and awaited journey. She breathed a sigh of relief as one contraction finished. She takes a deep breath, while another one is on it’s way.She looks at her husband Mark, who is sitting on the chair, holding her hand and is trying to comfort her. This is their first child, after seven years of marriage. They were about to consider adoption ,when they found that they were pregnant. For her, as long as she could remember, knew she loved babies.God had finally answered her prayers. She could still remember when she was 6 years old, used to say to her mother, Mommy!can I hold little Rick and how her mother would smile at her and told her she was too young to hold him.Well, now she was a mother-to be herself and she knew that pretty soon she would be able to hold her precious angel as often as she wanted.
Mark is putting ice chips in her mouth,as now she is not allowed to eat or drink anything. He could see from her face, the eminent amount of pain she is in.He wishes that he could take away her pain as with each contraction, she squeezes her husband’s hand tightly.During her pregnancy, she would ask him,
honey,I don’t know what labor would be like. But the stimulation of the moment, thinking she would be holding a baby in her arms, coerced her to stop worrying. She could see that it was raining heavily outside. She could hear the droplets touching the ground while the wind tried to pass through them.
Her obgyn has now arrived and is instructing the nurses what to do next.On the machine, she could see her contractions going up and down, like notes of music, only this time when the note went up,she could feel the twinge. How long would my labor last ,she asks one of the nurses.
It will be over soon, she replies. She looks at Mark ,who is wiping the sweat off her face and tells her how much he loves her.She holds his hand and asks him,
Are you happy?
More than you can ever imagine ,he replies. She looks in his eyes which are sparkling with excitement. She had never seen him so joyous and delighted before as now he knows that there will be someone to call him “DAD” Suddenly her obgyn comes and says to one of the nurses,
I think it’s about time.Let’s do it. She could feel her heart beating expeditiously. She knew that a little while later, her life would never be the same.Uptil now,she had the freedom to live her life the way that pleased her.She wants to preserve this moment in her memory while awaiting for a more precious time. She is despondent to let go of this time yet she couldn’t wait for the next moment. She hadn’t thought like this before and was amazed at herselt that why was she even considering it now?.The turmoil of her emotions were like a ship going up and down with the currents of water.
By now she could see nurses on each of her side and obgyn in front of her.Mark was on her side, trying to assure her that everything would be fine. She could see the labor lights that were strong and powerful, throwing its rays on her.A mask was assigned to her face,to restore her supply of oxygen. She was following her doctors orders and was doing what she was being told to do.One of the nurses was giving her ice chips,as she was feeling thirsty and felt like needles piercing her throat. She looks at Mark, whose eyes are shinning with joy.
Her pain is now unbearable and she feels as if her body would explode. She feels like screaming at the top of her lungs, not caring what the people around, would think about her.Amidst this excruciating pain, she hears one of the nurses saying,
Congratulations!your bundle of joy is finally here.
By now the rain has stopped and the sun is gleaming with all it’s fullness like it is smiling upon them, for they now know they are on the path where happiness is awaiting them.
